January 2007

It was just like a normal night in the tavern, bustling with peasants and farmers enjoying a nice mug of ale and friendly banter amongst themselves.

And then he rose, almost overturning the wooden table.

‘Hear me, folks.’ , he cried. Which most did, putting down their mugs and turning to him.

‘I am a little drunk, and I find that I come up with the best poems when I am in such a state. As such, I just had this poem which I want to share with you all. If you like it, please tell me so, if you do not like it, please tell me so too.’, he chuckled.

A few nodded their heads, as afterall having someone recite a poem or singing a song was a common after meal entertainment.

And so he recited his poem. It was not that bad, but it was not that great either. At the end, there were a few scattered applauses, but the rest just chuckled, for the poem did not stir their hearts nor warm their blood.

Being the pompous fool that he was, he thought that the scattered applauses were an indication that he was actually very good.

With his ego now greatly inflated, he boasted, ‘Is there anyone who can recite poetry in here? Come forth now. ‘

Nobody bothered nor cared. Thinking that there was nobody able to do it, and with his ego now inflated to mammoth size, he sighed sadly, ‘Since there is nobody that can come forth, it means my poetry is so good that nobody in here can do better! I am that good!’

Then in the dark corner a slender figure rose. The figure slowly walks to the centre, pulling down the cloak, revealing a woman’s face of great beauty. And then in a crystal clarity voice she whispered, ‘I have come forth.’

And then she recited a poem, a poem of long forgotten heroes, a poem of long forgotten heroic deeds, a poem of epic battles, a poem of great sacifices. The whole tavern seemed to hold their breath as they listened intendly, and when she finally finished reciting, everyone jumped up in unison and cheered and clapped. A few wiped the tears off their eyes amidst the cheering. This was a poem that filled their hearts with great sorrow, yet also stirred their blood with epic battles and filled them with hope.

And when the cheering and clapping died down, people started to remember that pompous fool who just a few minutes before was claiming he was the greatest. They looked around and found he had already sneaked off into the night.

A farmer muttered under his breath, just loud enough to be overhead, ‘And he got his ass kicked.’

When things were at rock bottom recently for me, I decided to seek a fortune teller to tell my fortunes and perhaps provide some mystical guidance. I read somewhere that when people feel they are no longer in control of the situation they are in, when they feel helpless and life seems hopeless, most people will turn to mystical guidance for help. It does explain why some people change their religion when they are lying on their death bed.

Anyway after paying way too much money for the fortune telling services, I was told in summary that I will have bad luck. Not 1 year. Not 2 years, but 20 years. Apparently, the personal luck runs in a cycle of 10 years. If you have 2 cycles of bad luck side by side, you are considered to have very, very bad luck. I guessed I really believe it at that time, especially considering how rock bottom I was then.

Lately I sort of forgotten the whole incident. Until I was notified that the only second overseas training in my whole career so far that I am suppose to attend was cancelled because of poor response. It was bad enough that I could only get air tickets from Gulf Air. Then after getting my air tickets and hotel booked, I was notified that it was cancelled with no new training planned in the near future.

And so the words of the fortune teller came back to haunt me : You have bad luck.

It has been almost a week since the expansion for World of Warcraft, Burning Crusade was released. In that short time I managed to level my main character to level 64 and started a new Blood Elf female warlock.

And I must say, Blizzard did a very good job so far. For the starting area for Blood Elf, it looks absolutely beautiful. It reminds me of Disneyland, where everything is colourful. They even borrow the ‘sweep-on-its-own-bloom’ from Disney and put it in the area. For one who is so used to the bare waste of Barrens and Undercity, the Blood Elf starting area was really a pleasant change of scenary.

Also in terms of quest design, they learnt their lesson and streamlined it. No more running 10 minutes just to do 1 quest and another 10 minutes back to return the quest. It is all streamlined, and before I knew it, I already hit level 7.

For the Outlands, they also took in a lot of players feedback when it comes to the quests. Besides the usual kill this and that, get this and that, there are unique ones, like the bombing quest, looked in the boar’s poo quest etc. The bombing quests was fun and very different, and everyone in my guild actually loves it. The best part is that is possible to do the bombing quests again and again.

The 5 men instances are so different from the old 5 men instances. It is now possible to grab 5 players, run an instance that provides reasonable challenge and get some pretty good gear all within like 1-2 hours. So far I have tried 4 different 5 men instances, and I must say they up the difficulty quite well.

All in all, my first impression of TBC is pretty good. They say Blizzard does not come up with innovative ideas, they just do the same things as others exceptionally well. And they are a company that actually listens to their customers. And it seems in this case, they really did.

I feel old.

Yesterday was the day when the official Singapore launch of the expansion for World of Warcraft. After agreeing to purchase for Sister Stranger and another friend, I went down to Suntec to collect the copies.

The launch was not very properly manage, then again, I was not interested in whatever they had planned, I just want to collect my copies, rush home, install and play. It was then I realised that like 100% of the crowd there were older than me. There were kids in school uniforms, young working adults, but there was not a single old working adult like me. Suddenly, I felt very conscious.

I do know of an American in my guild who is like 59 years old, a grandfather and still actively raiding with us, but I think in Singapore an old working adult playing games is still viewed with certain ridicule.

Next time I am just going to order online and get the the next expansion delivered to my doorstep.

Got myself signed up for Twitter. Put it on the right hand side. Thanks to mrbrown for introducing it.

Now, it will be even cooler if I can update it by just sending a SMS. Seems like as of now I have to pay SMS charges to UK. They did mention that local charges should be coming soon.

Apple iPhone

I finally got a chance to go overseas for training after donkey years with the company. But I got a shock when I found out which airline I am leaving on.

Gulf Air

I don’t even know which country this airline is from! Seems like all other airlines are fully booked. At least the hotel seems to be in a nice location. But knowing my luck, most probably the bed is filled with bed bugs, I have a leaky toilet, and the hotel location is in a gay neighbourhood or something.

It is a new year, and I cannot say I really look forward to it. Much have happened in the past year or so, and I must say what happened does not give me much hope in the future.

But like they say, it IS a new year, and perhaps tomorrow can be better. I guess I should be pretty used to it by now, and one lesson that I do learn from all these is to appreciate the little things in life. A good meal, a nice trip, friends and family, and even managing to catch a rainbow after the rain from my office window, such small mundane things help to make my life slightly bearable.

So what better way to start the new year than to empty four thousand plus of comments spam from my dust covered blog and start rambling again?

Itch

The itch to start blogging is back. After almost a year.
